Mortar mix is a bonding agent used for the purposes of building. Mortar ingredients used most frequently to make various types of mortar are:
- Sand
- Cement
- Surki
- Mud
- Water
- Lime
It is very important to use quality ingredients to obtain a good mortar blend. Despite good ingredients, the ideal value of the mortar mix is not achievable. The characteristics of good ingredients in mortar are described below.
Properties of Good Mortar Ingredients

Lime: Lime has to be slacked well.
Sand: The sand should be smooth, angular and porous. It should be free from salts and other impurities.
Surki: Out of foreign matter, Surki should be simple and clear. Moving the sieve No. 8(US) should be good enough.
Mud: Mud should be free from adulteration.
Water: Air should be dry, salt-free and free of impurities.
