What is Plywood? Types of Plywood

Plywood is an engineered wood sheet material consisting of fine layers or fine wood veneer strands attached to each other placing 90 degrees of wood grains. It is a type of board that can be described as a mixture of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and Chip Board (Particle Board). It is a complex material that attaches wood sheets of resin and fiber.

plywood

Plywood has become popular throughout this decade because the content of moisture is relatively low, making it easy to perform various tasks with this. Plywood has become very important to use mainly for outdoor use. Plywood is used by the renowned British powerboat company to build Motor Torpedo Boats and Motor Gun Boats.

Types of Plywood

  • Softwood
  • Hardwood
  • Marine Plywood
  • Decorative Plywood
  • Tropical Plywood
  • Flexible Plywood
  • Aircraft Plywood

Softwood

Softwood Plywood, also known as spruce-pine-fir or SPF as it comes from spruce, pine, and fir. Although cedar (Cedrus sp), douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) can be made. When manufactured from spruce (Picea sp) the prominent grains are protected by a system to make this form of plywood as strong as concrete and used for shuttering and creation of strands

Hardwood

Hardwood Plywood is made with angiosperms. The firmness, hardness on the surface, inflexibility, quality of resistance identify this type of plywood. This can be used to weigh heavily.

Marine Plywood

Marine plywood is the type of plywood that can be used in damp, hot, rainy conditions. Also, it can be used for a long time in humidity. The marine plywood layers have too little center distance to know that the wood does not require liquid to be contained within the holes. It is also immune to fungi.

Decorative Plywood

Also called overlaid plywood is decorative plywood. Usually made of ash (Fraxinus sp.), oak (Quercus sp.), red oak (Quercus rubra), birch, maple (Acer sp.), mahogany, Philippine mahogany also known as seraya, rosewood (Dalbergia sisso).

Tropical Plywood

To make this type of plywood, different types of tropical area timbers are mixed. Although it was previously collected only from the Asian region, it is now also collected from Africa and America. Tropical contraplate popular for certain special qualities, such as

  1. Inflexibility
  2. Resistance quality
  3. Thickness
  4. Strength
  5. Density
  6. Evenness

As a tropical region of South Asia, plywood is mostly produced. Countries such as Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Dubai, and this type is used even in America. The bad impact of this type is that for extreme production of this type deforestation is becoming a great problem for some countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia because of these countries export plywood worldwide. Especially Malaysian plywood is known as the Malaysian board in Bangladesh and hugely popular among Bangladeshis because of its higher thickness.

Flexible Plywood

As the name goes, Versatile Plywood is used to make furniture or constructs that are versatile. The eighteen-century furniture made mostly of rounded designs. It’s made from Baltic Birch (Betula sp).

Aircraft Plywood

For the production of Aircraft Plywood, woods from Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla), Spruce (Picea sp.), Birch (Betula sp.). The African mahogany provides plywood for use in structural aircraft. European birch is good among the birch trees. This form is renowned for its intensity. This type is also made from Mahogany, Spruce, Birch but the special quality is that this is resistant to heat.
