Types of Pre-stressed Concrete

Types of Pre-stressed Concrete

According to the construction method, there are two kinds of pre-stressed concrete:

  1. Pre-tensioned concrete
  2. Bonded Post-tensioned concrete.
  3. Unbonded Post-tensioned concrete

Pre-tensioned Concrete

At first, wires or tendons are tensioned in this process, and then cement is poured. It creates a good tendon-concrete binding. As a consequence, the tendons are secured from degradation, immediately passing pressures. Tendons are grounded and extended, and when it is tough, the tension is transmitted to the cement. Then the tendon seeks to return to the original size, but resisted by the connection between the cement causes compressive pressure within it.

Bonded Post-tensioned Concrete

Closetopre-stressing, but first cement is poured here, then tensioning of tendons. Tendons are put in the participant at the appropriate locations and casting is then completed. The tendons are tensioned against the cement by hydraulic jacks after the concrete gets solid. Based on the model, the tendons are set in place when they have tensioned enough. Upon extracting the jacks, the stress persists and the strain is moved to the cement. This approach is commonly used in the design of monolithic slabs for mega-house construction projects where extensive ground causes problems at times. Moreover, post-tensioned concrete is also used in bridges. Read More

Post-Tensioning-Cables

Unbonded Post-tensioned Concrete

It is slightly different from post-tensioned concrete bonded. It allows the cables to move freely. Each tendon is covered with grease and plastic for this purpose. The cables achieve stress transfer to the concrete by means of anchors. There are certain advantages to this.

  • When attempting to restore function, the capacity to injure tendons.
  • The power to change cables independently.

There are also some drawbacks, such as if harmed, one or more cables can be disturbed by themselves and break out of the base.
