Indian construction is presently growing at a rapid pace and this growth can be directly related to the increase in population. To cater to the needs of the present population, in terms of infrastructure like housing and other amenities, the current insitu construction practice takes a prolonged time and cost can be reduced.
According to GOI reports, the current housing deficit in urban India is approximately 18.78 million houses. In this deficit, 95% belongs to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low Income Group (LIG). It is estimated that actual figures may be in the range of 40 million houses based on studies conducted by various private agencies. To provide housing for all by 2022 under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme, we need to construct 9400 million sqft in 6 years (2016 to 2022) as per GOI reports. It means 1600 million every year on an average basis. This deficit is approximately 200 urban centers which need 8 million construction every year in each urban center on an average basis. Since 95% of the houses to be are in the EWS and LIG category, there is a great scope of standardizing the houses in both of these segments across India. But the majority of these large scale projects under the PMAY scheme are being built using the conventional in-situ method of construction which complicates the project management in terms of speed and quality of construction and has to adopt industrialized building construction i.e. precast construction technology. Precast construction is now fastly catching up its growth in India and other global countries and is establishing itself as the construction techniques for the future. The different precast construction companies are a testimony of the same and many projects have been executed.
